Placenta Encapsulation

Benefits

I like to think of placenta remedies as a tool in your tool box as a new parent. They are a supplement tailored to your body, made by your body and will help you achieve optimal wellness after birth. During pregnancy, the placenta takes over hormone prodution, so when you’re not pregnant anymore, it can take some time to recalibrate. Ingesting low levels of these hormones via placenta capsules or tincture can help to lessen mood swings, hormonal sweats, fatigue and anxiety that often occur when the body is trying to recreate hormonal equilibrium.

Benefits include:

  • Increasing your milk supply

  • Pain Relief

  • Hormone balancing

  • Reduce stress and anxiety - keep “baby blues” at bay

  • Decrease postpartum bleeding

  • Increase in Iron

  • Reduce your uterus to it’s regular size

  • Energy boost

  • Speed-up healing

Encapsulation

Traditional birth recovery remedy. Your encapsulated placenta is full of magical, one-of-a-kind, life force energy. On average you can expect 100-200 capsules depending on the size of your placenta.

Take 1-2 capsules, 3 x daily. For better absorption take with orange juice.

How is my placenta prepared?

I prepare the placenta in my own home. I completely sanitize my space as well as my separate encapsulation equipment in accordance with Health Canada standards for cleaning medical supplies. After birth, your placenta is first steamed with herbs, and then dehydrated at 160F for at least 24 hours until thoroughly dry. It is then prepared into the remedies you’ve selected. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to email, call, or text.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • We always conduct an intake session to go over your health history as some details can change our approach to the remedies we’re making. This call will take about 30 minutes of your time and is included with every purchase.

  • It’s your organ! That’s right. You have control over what you do with your placenta. Just notify your birth team you will be taking it home or someone will be picking it up.

After delivery, the placenta placed in a plastic bag and sealed, and put on ice. Place in a refrigerator as soon as possible. Letting the placenta sit for 2-3 hours at room temperature will not harm it.

Encapsulation should occur within 72 hours of delivery. Or, if this is is not possible, the placenta should be frozen until it can be encapsulated.

If you are having a hospital birth, your practioners can provide you with a container for transport and ice for your bagged placenta, but please check ahead of time as each hospital is different.

Birth partners - make it your job to speak up once the placenta is delivered and tell your team again that you are keeping your placenta.

Please contact me as soon as possible to prepare for the arrival of your placenta.

Due to COVID 19 restrictions, I am only doing home pick-ups in the Peterborough area.

Alternatively, you can bring your placenta to me if you’re outside of my area.

Don’t worry, you will receive written instructions with your purchase and will need to drop off (or arrange a drop off from your doula, friend or family member) to my location.

  • Encapsulation: Take 1-2 capsules, 3 x daily. For better absorption take with orange juice.

    Tincture: 1/4tsp to 1/2tsp, 2-3 x daily

As always, listen to your body. If you feel like you want to take them more often, go for it. If you forgot one day, or you feel balanced, it’s all good! They are there for you when you need them.

Some people choose to taper down their use towards the end of their supply because they love the effect so much they don’t want to see it go!

  • Placenta Encapsulation is the process of turning raw placenta in to safe to consume capsules, similar to herbal supplements. We use a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) method of steaming with herbs and then your placenta is dehydrated at certain temperatures, ground in to fine powder, then manually filled into capsules.

  • Every placenta is a different size which will determine how many capsules we are able to produce. Remember, this was designed for your body. Trust the process.

  • On average, capsules support new parents from anywhere between 6-8 weeks or longer. Store them in a cool dark place. If you feel you are finished taking them for the time being, place them in your freezer for additional shelf life.

  • If you do not have access to a fridge right away, your placenta should be double bagged into zip-lock bags and placed into a clean 2 litre sterile, leak-proof container as quickly as possible.

This container should then go in to a cooler for no longer than 6 hours. The cooler should be filled with ice packs or two large bags of ice so that you can chill the placenta. After 6 hours your placenta should be stored in a fridge.

The placenta can remain the the fridge for up to 3 days. After that, the placenta must be stored in a freezer. It will stay preserved in the freezer indefinitely.

  • If the placenta is sent to pathology

If there is a uterine infection

If the placenta is improperly stored

If the birthing person smoked during pregnancy or if there was heavy drug usage.

Cancer of the placenta, which is called choriocarcinoma.

  • Encapsulation is still possible if you give birth with an epidural or if you have a Caesarean section. The placenta acts as a filter, filtering out toxins and sending them back to the your liver to be detoxed from the system.
