Why hire a Doula?

Maybe you’ve heard the word Doula, but aren’t really sure what that means. Well, I use the word Doula because it’s most well known and trusted, but we could also say womb witch, birth keeper, traditional birth attendant, companion, sister, friend. Not every Doula feels that way, but as a trained Clinical Herbalist who is passionate about returning to the natural ways of our ancestors, I feel that my practice is that of what we would’ve labelled as a traditional midwife- a woman who is called to births in the village, bringing her basket full of witchy goodness in the form of herbs and foods to support a labouring woman and her newborn baby. Midwives back then would’ve also been non-medical, as they trusted women and their bodies to birth their babies. When you work with a Doula like me who isn’t afraid to empower you to get exactly what you want from your pregnancy and birthing experience, you end up with embracing your own motherhood and trust in your body which supports you for years to come. I offer unwavering support and a tell-it-like-it-is but with a warm and loving energy attitude and approach to your care. Just imagine having me by your side for encouragement, an endless wealth of resources, and the hype woman you need to ensure a smooth and empowering home birth.

Your care includes:

Meet and Greet

Our first call is a meet and greet over zoom. This is a chance for us to say hello and get to know each other a bit before we move forward. This is also a great opportunity for me to meet your partner. Together, you can share with me your goals for your pregnancy and birth as well as what you’d like to receive most from our time together. We will take this time to schedule your future sessions into our calendar.

Let’s add a Reiki treatment!

Want to treat yourself to some beautiful Reiki energy? Let’s add a Reiki treatment to your appointments or book an additional in-home treatment on a separate day for some extra Nessa time. I will bring my table and my oracle cards to your home and will tuck you in on top of my table for a super relaxing and spiritual treatment. This is a great time to connect with your baby, relax, and maybe even receive some spiritual guidance.

Launch into a deep dive

Your health history is a really important part of the Clinical Care I offer. This virtual call lasts anywhere from 45 minutes to 2 hours depending on how complicated your health history is. We will talk about your health from birth, reviewing childhood illness, period health, previous pregnancies, major health issues, as well as how you’re feeling present day. After our meeting, I create a personalized prenatal herbal protocol for you which I prepare in my apothecary.

Child Birth Education + Birth Planning Session

As my Doula client you will have access to my online birth course (TBA) as well as a personalized session for planning your birth where I will guide you through some exercises that help you craft your sacred birthing space and rituals you would like to take part in. It gives me a chance to get the lay of the land for your birth space and gives you the chance to ask all of your “what if?” questions. I can also help you practice some comfort measures. This is an in-person session in your home for local clients, virtual for others. Up to 2 hours

Your Prenatal Appointments

We have two prenatals together and in each one we will start by doing a general prenatal health check-up to see how your remedies are working for you and if there any changes we can make to your herbal protocol. Then we can launch into any questions you have about your pregnancy and upcoming birth. Everything from emotional, physiological, and spiritual is welcomed. This session is 45 minutes at your home (local clients only) or virtual.

On-Call, Birth, and Postpartum?

I officially go on-call for you at 38 weeks, although what does that even mean? I do ask the clients keep in touch regarding signs and symptoms of labour whenever they happen. What’s more important to me is that we touch base in early labour to keep you on track with your goals and this helps keep birth productive and at home! I will join you in-person during the throws of active labour to support you and your partner however you need. After the birth of your baby, I will leave you to settle into motherhood and get some well deserved rest. Within the first two weeks I will come back for a postpartum follow-up where we can debrief about your birth, have some tea and some snuggles, and we can troubleshoot breastfeeding! I will leave you with some herbal remedies and so many well wishes.

During our time together you will…

✓ Feel empowered to make the choices that are right for you and your baby

✓ Know your birth rights!

✓ Have your fears addressed so you can set them aside

✓ Understand how pregnancy and birth works from your growing belly and bay, to the stages of labour, the flow of hormones and everything in between

What my Clients Are Saying…

  • So Grateful! - First Time Parents

We are so thankful for Nessa’s support throughout pregnancy and the birth of our baby. As first time parents, we felt initially overwhelmed, but Nessa was incredibly knowledgeable and gave us access to important information in a way that was accessible and applicable which was so appreciated! She provided incredible comfort measures during labour and her passion for prenatal care is evident - we are grateful for her care during our journey!

  • My Second Chance

After having a fairly traumatizing birth with my daughter, I knew if I was ever going to birth a baby again, I would do it with the assistance of a Doula. I also knew at the time, I would greatly benefit from visits with a Doula after my baby was born as I did not have family close suited for the support and caregiving I wanted after birth.

I touched base with Nessa very early in my pregnancy and together we made a plan. I felt instantly comfortable and very comforted in her presence. As my pregnancy progressed I felt more empowered to have a home birth! Nessa equipped me knowledge, information, and preparation tools to feel confidence in choosing this path!

  • Nurtured and Cared for

The postpartum support that Nessa provided was absolutely priceless. I felt nurtured and cared for. I felt validated on the tough stuff. Having a person come into one’s home in the baby’s early days is a very intimate time. Nessa was welcome in our space. Nessa was able to wear the baby, make a pot of soup, fold laundry, while providing me with support. She had all sorts of great tips and tricks for helping the baby sleep (to help me get sleep too!), as well as great podcast recommendations. She also encouraged me to have special time with my older daughter.

  • I feel very connect to Nessa

To this day I feel very connected to Nessa and I consider her a friend and confidante. She has a calling when it comes to this work and I recommend her at all times for Doula support as well as all the other wonderful things she does!

Have a question? start here!

  • Yes! I need 50% of your total invoice to secure your due date in my calendar and then we can split the remainder of the payments into two instalments. The final balance is always due before our home birth planning and preparation session.

  • Instructions for payment will be on your invoice. I prefer etransfer, cash or cheque so that we skip the fees. You can also pay with your credit card through my website.

    You can etransfer to radicalmotherwellness@gmail.com.

  • Yes! This is where my heart is and I believe in your ability to birth at home, fully in your power. There is always a time and place for emergency medicine and for hospital transfers to take place, but I believe most women and babies are safer birthing in the comfort of their own home with as little intervention as possible.

  • I am so excited to say a full bodied YES to this question. If you live in the Durham Region, Peterborough, Kawarthas and surrounding areas up to 1.5hrs, and are looking for in-person support for your home birth, please apply to work with me!

  • I have! I have attended births in the past for both planned and unplanned C-Sections.

  • Yes! There are many herbs that are perfectly safe for pregnant women to take. My training in Clinical Herbalism has provided me with the knowledge of what is safe to use and what to stay away from when it comes to plant medicine.

“Little is known scientifically about the safety of most herbs during pregnancy. However, much the same can be said for the use of many pharmaceuticals during pregnancy, most of which have not been tested or proven safe in pregnancy. Even medications previously thought to be safe in pregnancy, including Tylenol, have now been found to cause potential problems for baby. And as many as 90% of all pregnant women will be prescribed some medication during pregnancy!

    -Aviva Romm, MD

  • Yes! I am so excited to include your medicines as a part of our time together.

  • Absolutely! I am happy to work with anyone on your care team. I have worked with all kind of care providers from nurses, obgyns, anesthesiologists, naturopaths, midwives, and more!

  • No. As a Clincal Herbalist, I can not diagnose you. I can however, work with a diagnosis another care provider has given you.

  • Everyone’s journey is so unique! Our herbal protocols on average last 2 weeks to one month.

  • Clinical Herbalist Elderberry Herbal Academy (2022)

Full Spectrum Doula Training Bebo Mia (2016)

  • Absolutely! As part of your care package, you have access to me via what’s app. I will reply within 24-48 hours. I am a single mom so sometimes I am unable to get back to you immediately.

  • Personally, I like to connect with clients during early labour because it can be game-changing for good birth outcomes and a more effective and efficient labour. I usually pop over for an hour or two in early labour, and then go home to prepare myself and my family for your upcoming birth if you live in Peterborough. Otherwise I will be in touch over the phone or video call. It also allows for things like prodromal labour to play out and allows me to gather my strength to support you when it’s go time. I stay in touch with my clients throughout the hours with text so I can help see how thing are going. Once you are in the throws of labour and things have really shaped up into a good rhythm, I’ll join you, but we will be talking up until then so you’re never alone. As a Single Mom I like to give myself lots of time to get to you and make sure things are good here at home. Once I’m at your birth in-person, I will leave after you have birthed your placenta, attempted breastfeeding and your baby are ready to rest post birth. But every birth is different! I won’t leave until it feels right to do so.

If your labour is long, there will be times where I will take a break to rest, eat, or get some fresh air. To date, I the longest I’ve supported a client was no more than 24 hours.

  • I do have a section in my contract that does cover this. In a nutshell, if there is a weather scenario that would put my life at risk, I am unable to attend your birth. This has never happened to me and with good communication and planning I do not foresee this being a problem in the future.

In the event it does happen, I will credit you an amount which can be applied to future treatments and services.

  • I only support home births but if you need to transfer to the hospital I will come with you! This is when you need a Doula the most in terms of advocacy and information. That being said, you and your partner will have to advocate for me to be part of your team and present in the spaces you are being cared for with your hospital care team.

  • I sure do! When you apply to work with me let me know you’re interested and I can add it to our invoice.
