Guide to Cleansing Grains – What They are and How to Use Them
Have you heard of cleansing grains?
Ohhhh I love them so much. They are an all natural way to exfoliate and leave your skin crazy soft.
What are Cleansing Grains?
Cleansing grains are a gentle exfoliator made with natural ingredients such as oats, clay, herbs, nuts, and seeds. When you combine them with a liquid, they turn into a slightly gritty paste that serves as your gentle exfoliator. They are shelf stable and can stay fresh for a long time.
Why Use Cleansing Grains?
Cleansing grains are an excellent way to brighten your face and they’re so gentle you can use them daily. We’re basically always shedding skin cells and without exfoliation, they just sit on the surface of our skin until something comes along and brushes them off. Sometimes, this can result in clogged pores, or dull looking skin.
In comes cleansing grains to clear them away gently, showing off that glowy natural skin of yours underneath!
Ingredients in Our Cleansing Grains
Grain Powder - Oats
Oats are soothing, anti-inflammotry, moisturizing, and are able to restore the skin’s barrier, and reduce itching. The lipids and proteins found within contain humectant, occlusive and emollient properties. Due to the antioxidant benefits, oats can help in reversing damage caused by UV rays, pollution, harsh chemicals
Herbs – Rose and Hibiscus
Rose petals are such a lush ingredient which just screams “self-care!”. Roses can help your skin stay hydrated, balance any redness with it’s anti-inflammatory properties, and help to balance your skin’s natural Ph. Roses are also stress reducing. Energetically, roses offer protection. They’ve been used in cosmetics for centuries.
Hibiscus petals help to aid in the skin’s elasticity, inhibiting elastase—an enzyme that breaks down elastin in your skin. Essentially, this plant fights aging by lifting and firming up your skin. Hibiscus are high in antioxidants and help combat skin-deteriorating free radicals that we may get from pollution and UV rays which cause skin to age prematurely. The hibiscus is also astringing, which can help to reduce pores. An excellent choice for sensitive skin as it is soothing and anti-inflammatory.
How to Use Cleansing Grains
The following steps can be used for any cleansing grains you make yourself or purchase from our apothecary.
Take 1/2 – 1 tsp. of cleansing grains into the palm of your hand or a small bowl.
Add liquid of your choice and mix together.
Apply the muddy mixture to your face, legs, or kitty, and gently scrub in a circular motion with your fingertips.
Rinse with warm water and follow with your toner and moisturizer.
Tips for Cleansing Grain Use:
As tempting as it is to keep your jar in the shower, store your grains away from moisture, in the bathroom cupboard.
Less is more – you don’t need more than a teaspoon of cleansing grains to do your whole face.
It can be messy – Your sink, tub, or shower may be left with grains. That’s ok! Scoop and compost, or let mother nature take it down the drain.
Cleansing Grains Mask
Try it as a mask!
If you mix your cleansing grains with less liquid, or you use a thicker liquid such as yogurt or honey, you can apply and leave on your face as a mask.
I hope you enjoy them as much as I do!
