1 in 8 women develop thyroid problems

Did you know 1 in 8 women will develop thyroid problems in her lifetime?

YIKES! This is obviously an area we need to bring some nourishment to. If you're curious about the thyroid check out my previous posts for more information on how it functions, but for now let's talk about how dis-ease in the thyroid manifests.

Have you heard of or been diagnosed with

🦋 HYPERTHRYOIDISM?

🦋 HYPOTHYROIDISM?

🦋 HASHIMOTOS?

How to tell the difference:

HyPOthyroidism

Hypothyroidism occurs when the thyroid gland doesn't produce enough thyroid hormones, primarily thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3).

Symptoms

  • Fatigue

  • Weight gain

  • Cold sensitivity

  • Dry skin and hair

  • Constipation

  • Muscle weakness

  • Depression

  • Menstrual irregularities

Suspected Causes

  • Autoimmune thyroiditis (Hashimoto's disease) is a common cause.

  • Iodine deficiency.

  • Certain medications or treatments.

Western Tests might include: 🩸 tests measuring levels of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), T4, and T3 help diagnose hypothyroidism and western treatment might typically involve synthetic thyroid hormone replacement medications, such as levothyroxine, to restore hormone levels.

HyPERthyroidism

Hyperthyroidism occurs when the thyroid gland produces an excessive amount of thyroid hormones.

Symptoms

  • Weight loss

  • Increased appetite

  • Rapid heartbeat

  • Anxiety and nervousness

  • Heat intolerance

  • Sweating

  • Tremors

  • Sleep disturbances

  • Menstrual irregularities

Suspected Causes

  • Autoimmune disorder (Graves' disease) is a common cause.

  • Nodules on the thyroid gland.

  • Inflammation of the thyroid (thyroiditis).

Western Testing: 🩸 tests for TSH, T4, and T3, along with additional tests like radioactive iodine uptake or thyroid scans, help diagnose hyperthyroidism and Western treatment options include medications to block excess hormone production, radioactive iodine therapy to reduce thyroid activity, or in some cases, surgery to remove part or all of the thyroid gland.
