Think of Your Menstrual Cycle as a Bonfire

Our menstrual cycle is a reflection of nature’s seasons, flowing in harmony with the world around us. Living in Ontario, where the seasons shift so vividly, it’s easy to see how this rhythm plays out not just in nature but within ourselves. I like to think of the cycle as a bonfire; one that grows, burns bright, and slowly fades, only to spark again each month.

Let’s break it down:

Winter (Menstruation): The Dying Embers

This is the quiet, introspective phase of our cycle. The fire has burned down to glowing embers, eventually cooling to ash. Just like the stillness of winter or the darkness of a new moon, this is a time to rest, reflect, and release. Your energy is low, your body is calling for stillness, and it’s okay to embrace that. This is your invitation to honor rest without guilt.

Spring (Follicular Phase): Gathering Kindling

As the cold of winter melts away, spring emerges with fresh energy. This phase is like collecting kindling for a fire small sparks of creativity and energy begin to flicker. Your body is gearing up, thawing from the quiet, and you may feel a sense of renewal. Ideas bloom, energy builds, and you’re ready to step back into the world.

Summer (Ovulation): The Bonfire Burns Bright

Here we are at the peak, the bonfire is roaring, the warmth and glow pulling everyone close. During ovulation, we are magnetic, vibrant, and social. This is when we host the party, soak up the energy of connection, and feel our most expansive. Like the fullness of summer, this is a time to celebrate yourself and share your light with the world.

Fall (Luteal Phase): The Fire Dies Down

The party winds down. Guests leave, the flames begin to shrink, and the energy turns inward. This is the luteal phase, the time to release what no longer serves you and prepare for rest. Like trees shedding their leaves in fall, your body starts its own process of letting go. It’s a time to draw your circle smaller and nurture yourself as you prepare to enter winter again.

The Cycle Begins Again

Some of us sync our cycles with the new moon, leaning into the darkness to embrace rest and renewal. Others bleed with the full moon, finding release in its glow. Whatever rhythm you flow with, your cycle connects you to nature in a profound way.

You can even align your cycle with the elements:

Air (Spring): A time for ideas, clarity, and fresh starts.

Fire (Summer): Your most vibrant and energetic self.

Earth (Fall): Grounded, reflective, and focused on releasing.

Water (Winter): Deeply intuitive, flowing, and restful.

When we honor this rhythm, we honor ourselves. Our bodies, just like nature, are always working in perfect harmony.

Do you feel connected to the seasons of your cycle? Let’s chat about it! I’d love to hear how you experience your cycle.
